Le 1er mai, un groupe de l'unité d'élite « Navy Seal Team 6 » a engagé une opération dans la périphérie de la ville d'Abbottabad, à 100 km (62 miles) au nord-est d'Islamabad, la capitale du Pakistan. Le chef d'Al-Qaïda, Oussama Ben Laden a été tué par balle durant l'opération.
